Bottom line: If you're nearby and don't mind waiting for a table, stop by, but don't go out of your way.
About: After hearing about this brunch spot from friends, and doing some research online, I thought it would be a no-brainer, an amazing brunch. Maybe I had high expectations, but even so, I was thoroughly disappointed. We were told there was a wait, so we went to sit at the bar. We ended up moving to a table that was available the whole time, but it was as if the table wasn't in any of the waitresses' sections, as we were basically ignored. No water or coffee refills, had to ask multiple times for water and silverware, just bad bad service. And, it is HOT in there! There's no AC and the heat from the kitchen behind the bar permeates the restaurant.
Food/Drink: The food was decent, but nothing special. Both dishes came highly recommended by our server, so we were excited to try them out.
- Texas Toast thick-sliced Portuguese sweet bread, grilled with cinnamon egg batter: For $5.95 this was a good-sized meal. The French toast came with a huge scoop of butter melting in the middle of the plate - so definitely ask for this on the side! The slices were a bit soggy, too moist for my taste, but the flavor was very good with the hint of cinnamon.
- Franklin Veggie Bagel Melt: steamed garden veggies with melted cheese, on a bagel. On paper, this sounds great, especially at $5.75. In reality, the veggies were tasteless, very bland. And who am I kidding to order a bagel outside of NYC? Ok, maybe blame that one on me, but the bagel was also very bland and while it was supposed to be an everything bagel, I could count the seeds on it, probably about seven.
The Franklin Spa has a selection of fresh fruit smoothies, prices based on market price of the ingredients, but we opted for coffee as it was early in the morning. Iced coffee to be precise. Not only did the coffee come in the smallest glass I've eve seen iced coffee come in, not once did a waiter stop by to see if we wanted a refill (we even had to walk up to a waiter to ask for the check!). The coffee was fine, no skim milk here by the way.
Atmosphere: The atmosphere was that of a dingy diner. No air conditioning, poor service, unappealing bathroom. You can watch your food get cooked behind the bar (whether or not you want to see that). There are some vintage signs and photoss around the walls, and there is a massive gumball machine in the middle of the restaurant. We felt rushed and it was an overall unpleasant experience. However, I really want to give the Franklin Spa the benefit of the doubt because I have truly heard amazing things about this place. So if you go to Newport and happen to stop by, please comment below and let us know if you have a better experience!
