Bottom line: The best brunch in Newport with the freshest ingredients.
About: A small cafe just outside the main tourist areas of Newport, Rhode Island. You probably won't go unless you know and now you do. Seriously, incredible service, extremely fresh ingredients, diverse menu with healthy options, and well-priced.
Food/Drinks: The menu is split between breakfast and lunch options, with a few highlights: there is a kids menu, a healthier menu, and the option of gluten-free bread.
- Egg white sandwich: made with spinach, tomatoes and cheese (comes with feta, I swapped for cheddar). The whole grain bread it comes on is thick yet light. The bread is lightly toasted and extremely fresh. Together, these ingredients - while a bit messy to keep together - form the best breakfast sandwich I've ever had. The dish comes with a bowl of fresh fruit too! ($8.99)
- Egg white scramble and pancake: first came the pancake, the size of the large plate it was served on. Sprinkled slightly with powdered sugar, the pancake was so delicious it didn't even need syrup. A few seconds later, the other part of the order arrived: an egg white scramble with onions, peppers and feta. The eggs were great and the onions really rought the dish together.
- Specialty coffee drink: I had the "nutty mint mocha" which is a delicious mixture of mint, mocha, hazelnut, espresso, and milk. I usually go for simple dishes and drinks, but this looked too good to pass up. It was amazing! Not too sweet or strong and a perfect complement to my savory meal. ($4.25)
Atmosphere: Filled with more locals than tourists, Corner Cafe is a Newport gem that definitely deserves a stop when you're in town. The servers are friendly and attentive, paying equal attention to the regulars and people like me who have never been before and happen to be holding a city map and a camera (aka obvious tourist). The decor includes paintings, old diner ads, exposed brick, and cozy cushions on the window seats. Very cute and something for everyone!
